VANREE News Update - Issue: 3

Back to News

Willunga, 1 August 2006

We are normally not that quick with writing news letters, but there are some exiting developments within VANREE Software Consultancy.

• From next week we will welcome Josh Hagger as our next employee to make our team stronger. Josh has just finished his TAFE certifications and is a young and very enthusiastic junior consultant. He also will be trained to become a Microsoft Certified Professional.

• Thanks to our well functioning priority support logging system and very hard work, we managed to lower the number of high priority cases drastically. We are not entirely there yet, but with the highly appreciated input of the 2 junior consultants we will be able to respond quicker and more efficiently in the near future.

• A quick reminder: We are keeping our web-site (www.vanree.com) more up-to-date and you will find useful information about anti-virus and our services. A new section is the HowTo’s, a collection of freely downloadable documents with handy tips and tricks.

• To keep your PC and network virus and spy ware free starts with you! Most of the trouble enters your system by easily preventable measures, to name a few:

  • Keep your anti virus and anti spy ware up to date and keep an eye on it’s functioning. Our customers who have subscribed to our managed McAfee Total Protection for Small Business have an extra safety: We check very regularly and e-mail you when we see your McAfee stopped updating. Please note that an antivirus program like McAfee is never a 100% guarantee you never will have an undetected virus on your PC. Virus makers are so quick nowadays to exploit holes in the system and to spread them (see below). Any antivirus program is as good as the viruses it knows and can scan for. We know McAfee does an excellent job with their world-wide 24 hour standby team, but it still takes time to produce a cure and distribute it.
  • Do not open attachments of e-mails, without double checking you trust the attachment and e-mail source. There are so many nasty e-mails circulating which looks like they are legitimate but contain an attached surprise. Remember: banks, retailers, Microsoft, etc will NEVER ask you to send passwords or other sensitive information. Also links in e-mails to websites can be false, be very cautious when you go to a website, check the address in the bar and make sure you recognize this as a valid one.
  • We highly discourage you to use peer-to-peer sharing programs (like bear-share and limewire to name a few) on your business PCs. These programs allow you to swap (illegal) music and videos, they are also a major source for viruses as we found recently with some PCs. Another problem with these programs is that it can consume enormous bandwidth of the internet connection and cause other functions and users degraded functionality.

We are here to take the stress out of your IT

With kindest regards,

Edwin van Ree and the team
